Fabián Lares is an experienced investment banker and advisor based out of Toronto, Canada, with more than 20 years of capital markets experience. Fabian is a specialist in fundraising, debt structuring M&A and opportunities in primary and secondary markets for technology companies (private pre-IPO space). He further specialises in originating private technology investments, as well as solid off-market opportunities in infrastructure, real estate and renewables.
He was formerly managing director heading up the investment banking origination team at JB Capital (JBC) in Spain, the independent investment bank founded by Javier Botín. His role was to source transactions for the investment banking activity at JBC linked to technology, real estate, infrastructure and renewables. Among his responsibilities, he maintained regular contact with global institutional investment funds, family offices and asset managers. At the same time, he headed up the alternative investment arm for the principal via the venture capital desk as its private deals CIO, having built a portfolio of startup investments in spaces such as cybersecurity, data analytics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, video synopsis and retail tech, among others. He has also led fundraising initiatives at JBC for its venture capital unit, raising more than €50m.
Before this role Fabián was head of JBC’s TMT equity research desk for 9 years, with market coverages for the Iberian and European markets, winning the award for best stop picker in the Tech space by Thomson Reuters in 2016. He has held board member and observer positions at Sqrrl Technologies in Boston and BriefCam in Tel Aviv, and other investments made by JBC.He previously held other roles in capital markets in other global investment banks in Paris, London and Lisbon, and prior to working in finance held communications roles at Telefonica and Nortel Telecom (both in Miami).
Fabian also serves as the CEO of Toronto based Oaktech Capital as well as serving as Senior Advisor for Guixer and Partners, a boutique digital investment firmMr. Lares holds an MBA from Instituto de Empresa and a BA and MA degrees from the University of Western Ontario in Canada.
